I was invited to try Bard, Google’s new entry into the AI-ChatGPT market.
Say what?
Here’s the deal in plain English. Google has unveiled the next generation of online search. It’s an app called Bard, a companion to Google’s online search engine. Bard acts as your creative collaborator by reading trillions of words, picking up on human speech patterns and transforming them into responses. Bard can plan the perfect birthday party or write a thesis on thermodynamics. Bard can evaluate the pros and cons of crypto investing or write a convincing birthday email to your grandma.
And kids will love watching Bard do their math homework.
Bard is still in the developmental phase. So, this beta version is intended to demonstrate the concept and solicit feedback. So, far, it’s pretty awesome. I’m told that the final version of Bard will be a game changer, able to automate writing computer code.
A heads up to you well-paid web developers.
Here's my take. There’s no doubt that AI has amazing potential. It’s the ultimate magic 8 ball that knows all the answers. When your kid needs a paper on the Spanish Inquisition, Bard can knock one out in seconds.
Sure, it’s tempting to bypass the learning process. But there’s a risk. Will we become too lazy and reliant on tech? Will we lose our sense of discovery and curiosity? Bard can digest terabytes of data and package it into digestible bites. But can it capture life’s subtleties and humor? Can Bard be clever or thought-provoking?
Will robojocks replace human DJs on a radio station near you? It wouldn’t be hard to replicate: Hey, it’s Bard in the morning playing the best mix of the 80’s & 90s with weather on the fives - but saying nothing of interest.
At what point do we sacrifice the human element?

I always loved the Buy n' Large stores in Wall-e where fat people floated around in lounge chairs
Pixar's Wall-e becomes more and more relevant as the movie ages and society leans into AI, now in the form of Bard and Chat-GPT. I see kids on e-bikes and can only think we're breeding another generation of obese adults who get no exercise and can't think critically.
